Ode to the School Bleachers

A structure that stands
Taller than the rest.
We stare at it now
As the sun sets in the west.

We recall the days
When we used to run
Up and down the boards
While they split in the sun.

The board second from the bottom
That we'd use as a spring,
We'd jump up and down on
Until we'd hear the bell ring.

We'd jump at bottom,
We'd jump in the middle,
While the brittle supporting poles
Started to cave in a little.

We'd jump at the top
And the structure would start to shudder,
We'd stop for a moment
And then start to mutter:

"The structure is collapsing
It will then soon fall,
We'd better leave it alone for a while
Or we'll find ourselfs against the wall."

Now we stand and watch it
As the mist is rolling in,
The workers taking it apart,
The boards laying in a bin.

We will always remember our structure
Taller than the rest.
As we stare at it now,
The sun sets in the west.
