Neon

1) Element name: Neon

2) Element symbol: Ne

3) Number of electrons, protons, and neutrons: 10 electron, 10 proton, 10 neutrons

4) Atomic number: 10

5) Atomic mass: 20.179

6) Characteristics:

Neon is a colorless, odorless, monatomic gas.

7)

History:

It was first separated from other inert gases in 1898 by the British chemist Sir William Ramsay and Moris Travers (1872-1961).

The first demonstration of the existence of a stable isotope in an element was performed with neon in 1912.

Three things made from the element:

- neon produces a crimson glow in a vacuum electric-discharge tube and is used extensively in the familiar neon light of advertising displays

- liquid neon is used as a cryogenic refrigerant

- used in high-voltage testers

8) Isotopes:

Neon occurs naturally in three stable isotopes:

Neon-20, which is the most abundant isotope, neon-21, and neon-22.

9) No stable chemical compounds of neon have been observed. Molecules of the element consist of single atoms.

10) Neon melts at -248.6 °C (-415.5 °F) and boils at -246.08 °C (-410.94 °F).
