I recently borrowed this book from a friend, and found it very useful. I was already a fairly fast reader, but I had never investigated "speed reading".

I found that by following these techniques, not only did I read faster, but my comprehension improved. The book covers speed reading techniques and also related improvements in study skills for students.

The most useful technique I found was "layered reading". Skim through the entire book at about 1 second per page, followed by a second skim through the book at about 4 seconds per page. This gives you a much better mental framework for what is in the book. Then read through the book at a normal or slightly faster rate, and you'll find that you understand it much better as you read.

I also found that running my finger along the page did help improve my reading speed. That part alone imcreased my rate on a reading test from 500 words per minute up to 800. The techniques sound funny at first, but I found that they actually work.
